Why You Must Discipline Yourself

So Someone Else Doesn’t

The Wisdom Man

There are many people in this world who feel that authority is a problem. They don’t have the discipline to let anybody or anything exerting power over them. These are rebels. You’ve seen all sorts of kids in public places defying their moms or dads.  Screaming their heads off and creating a needless spectacle.

They have a tough time with authority. Fair enough. In their case as children, they are still learning anyway.  You have a problem with people telling you what to do. You think you have a better idea of what you can do with your life. Once Again, that is fair enough but in the majority of cases, this thinking creates failure, not a success.

Discipline – Whose Responsibility Is It?

But here’s the challenge. If you feel that way, you have to accept responsibility for yourself. In other words, you must have a better game plan for your life than the people that you’re turning your back on. You don’t want authority exercised over you by your father, mother, coach supervisor. You don’t like the attitude from the voice of your teacher. Once again, that’s fair enough.

But you better have a life plan that will take you to where you want to go. If not, you are just kidding yourself. The truth is, if you refuse to subject yourself to discipline, someone, eventually, will do it for you. And honestly, it’s not going to come from a place of love and understanding. There will be no graciousness, compassion, and kindness of your parents.

Some may feel that they will escape the discipline of corporate life by pursuing entrepreneurship and becoming a business owner. If you think a boss is a tough wait until you get unhappy customers!  The option is to develop your power of self-discipline.

Parental Discipline

When your parents attempt to discipline you, please understand that they’re punishing you because they love you. They know from experience the bad things that can happen to you if you have no discipline. Also, they know that you can gain a lot of weight, and your health will deteriorate at a certain point in the future resulting in sickness and possibly even death.

Their most profound lesson though is that without self-discipline, you might run afoul of the law. In fact, they know that without adequate self-discipline, you probably won’t be able to find a job, much less keep one. That’s how vital self-discipline is.

Please make no mistake about it. This is the glue that holds your life together. You might not enjoy it, you might reject this truth, but all the rejection and hardship in the world is not going to make this fact disappear. It is the truth.

Self-discipline is required. It’s needed today the same way it was needed yesterday and will be necessary long into the future. Until and unless you can understand these central facts, you are going to drive your life to a bad ending. This is not a joke.

Legal Discipline – Could End Up In Jail!

Again, you have discipline yourself, or someone else will do it for you. Just how bad can things get? Well, you can go to prison. And let me tell you when you show up in prison, you better tow the line, follow the rules, or you will get infraction after infraction added to your time.

Now you may be thinking that these transgressions are just points in some ledgers somewhere that doesn’t really have any effect. Well, think again. The more infractions you have, the longer you will stay in jail.

You may be in there for a relatively minor crime initially. But you refuse to be disciplined, and how you refuse to follow the rules, you might remain in prison for a much longer time.

Even worse, if you’re so undisciplined that you harm an inmate. Or you get into some altercation. Hence, one or more inmates injure you, or whatever other scenarios may happen, your prison sentence can get dramatically extended.

That’s how the world of discipline works. Either you apply discipline to yourself or something or someone else will. Believe me. Nobody can discipline you with as much kindness, love, and understanding as to the discipline you give yourself.

Self- Discipline – Practice and Develop Yourself

This is why it’s imperative to practice reinforcing or developing discipline every single day. Sure, you may not like the way things are. Sure, there’s always a short cut. Of course, you are uncomfortable with the things that you have to each day.

In fact, at times, you feel like your life is some routine that is just punishment, or it’s as if you are going through a trial. You’re not really convinced that you’re doing the things that you want to do. Well, here’s the truth. We’re no longer children.

Once you’re past the age of 18, you’re considered an adult. You’re going to have to live with the consequences of your decisions. Unfortunately, if you make a choice to be undisciplined, the effects can be very harsh.
