Welcome to another segment of my series on critical technologies essential to an entrepreneur’s opportunity potential, growth, and future prosperity.  In this segment, I’m tackling the topic of robotics.

When we say Robotics, one thing comes to most people’s minds: It is a futuristic technology. It may even be a movie such as Lost In Space. Moreover, when we say future technology, most people think that it will take decades before it happens. However, that was before.  In other words from a new entrepreneur’s perspective, the future is now.

Over the years, Robotics powered by Artificial Intelligence have been influencing our daily lives and activities. In advanced countries, robots are widely-used in doing hard and precise tasks such as manufacturing cars and handling heavy materials or equipment. Some robots are performing live surgeries along with human assistance. So whether we like it or not, let’s all accept the fact that the robotics technology is finally here.  Sound like an entrepreneurs dream?  It is!  But, slow down a bit.

However smart, entrepreneurial minds are finding ways to deliver this critical business technology to middle tier and less stressful environments to improve the lives of more people.

What is Robotics precisely, by the way? Listed below are five necessary things that new entrepreneurs and savvy business owners should know about it.

1. Robotics is a kind of Study, not a field of Expertise.

When we say “study,” it means that a particular topic is still in progress, a fact that applies to this present-day Robotics. This is contrary to the word expertise, which means that the matter had already reached its peak.

Needless to say, the present-day Robotics sure requires a lot of time and effort before it reaches its so-called ‘perfection.’  For entrepreneurs, this is a fantastic opportunity for growth

2. Robotics doesn’t solely focus on making Robots.

Contrary to what most people think, manufacturing Robots and making them work is just one of the scopes of Robotics. The truth is, Robotics is much broader, as it mainly focuses on how a robot’s existence can affect people’s lives and their daily activities as well as the economy as a whole.

How can robots help improve people’s lives? What contribution can they give to society? Is their existence needed or not? Are they expensive? These are only some of the questions concerning this study.  The answers to some of these questions may be the fuel for many entrepreneur dreams coming to reality.

3. Robotics combined with “AI” isn’t necessarily an evil thing.

Concepts about Artificial Intelligence or “AI” robots received terrible publicity since the appearance of The Terminator movie franchise. However, whether you believe it or not, it will take decades, if not centuries before an AI Robot develops a ‘mind of its own.’  So in the meantime, us entrepreneurs have plenty of time to think for ourselves!

4. Robotics helps us in discovering new things without exposing us to imminent danger.

Because of Robotics, it became possible for scientists to view ocean depths that are impossible for humans to explore. With the help of robots, they can now observe activities in some parts of Chernobyl in Russia without the fear of getting poisoned by its dangerously radioactive environment.

5. Robotics and robots help conserve time, effort and money.

Because of Robotics, robots are now being used in handling tough jobs such as cutting and designing metals as well as assembling cars and other things. Because of this, the required volume of certain types of “older” jobs utilizing large volumes “human resources” is also minimized, thereby helping the factory and its company in reducing overall expenses but also create higher skilled jobs in other ways.  While this does have a negative impact on some traditional factory or manufacturing jobs, it opens the door for new entrepreneurial thinking and business opportunities.

Since Robotics is also a kind of technology, whether it has a good or bad effect on us or the environment only depends on how we are going to use it. However, looking on the bright side, all of us will greatly benefit from such technology, only if we use it correctly.  This is the challenge of our new entrepreneur’s way of thinking that is making the future so bright.  Look at your current business or your new business idea to see how you may leverage robotics and future technologies.  It is time for you to take full advantage of a future that is here and now!

Let us end with a few thoughts.  Are you a person with technology expertise?  Are you a person with software development expertise? Do you have an interest in “the future of work?”  Do you have expertise in non-technical areas that the public may be interested in but you haven’t explored the connection to technology yet? Have you considered how you could take advantage of opportunities in the world of “Big Data” (see my article in Forbes) If you answered yes to 1 or more of these click the button below and take a look at how to monetize your expertise as a consultant?
