Exactly what do companies look for in prospective employees? That is a question I see from time to time in career discussion forums online. Naturally, for each function or position, the particular response to that inquiry would change. Nonetheless, there are certain skills that companies look for in all employees, whether the employee is a software designer, a retail salesperson, or pretty much any other function.

Must Have Abilities for Consistent Success

1. BASIC STANDARD ABILITIES‚ Reading, writing and math! Yes it is still true.  Unfortunately, and surprisingly, a good portion of high school graduates (and also some university grads) in the United States does not read at the level of a properly educated 8th grader and can’t do multiplication without a calculator! Companies are seeking employees able to read well, write acceptably, and who can do basic math in a company environment (fractions, percentages, etc.) In addition, the modern standard skills of using a keyboard (typing), basic computer system understanding, as well as the capacity to make use of most electronic devices (e.g. handheld digital devices, facsimile machine, standard word processing program, and so on) round out the basic skill needs for work success.

2. INDIVIDUAL PERSONAL ABILITIES‚ Can a potential worker speak well and slang free? Can he/she respond to the concerns of customers in an informative, respectful, and insightful manner? Can the prospect offer excellent customer care? While not every person has an extroverted personality, successful workers can communicate in a non-confrontational, respectful manner with their coworkers, employees, administration, executives, as well as clients. Being able to function well with others is an important skill for success in all jobs.

3. JOB SEARCH STRATEGY‚ Job search is a detailed process that needs a good deal of dedication and focus to be conducted successfully. It follows the old principal that old style computer programmers describe as GIGO ‚ Garbage In, Garbage Out. If you put lackluster effort in, you will obtain poor outcomes. Companies are seeking potential employees that understand how to present themselves in a positive manner as well as that show interest and some understanding of the firms they approach. Not only do prospects get reviewed based on their skills and work history, likewise on how they are conducting their preparation for their search. Passionate candidates with lesser skills have about the same chance of getting the job as dull boring prospects with better skills.

4. CAREER SURVIVAL ‚ Whenever you have an economic period when layoffs rise who gets the laid off and also who doesn’t is often a matter of numbers, however it is also frequently a matter of past performance. Employees that have actually steadily shown their worth, shown initiative, as well as made themselves an important asset to the company have lower occurrences of being laid off compared to workers that put forth mediocre energy into their jobs. Surviving within a firm during downsizing or going up the career ladder is a success skill that is learned and is knowingly improved upon among good leaders and successful professionals.

5. EXPERTISE (PROFESSIONAL) DEVELOPMENT‚ As all advanced engineering and tech pros understand‚ it’s learn or churn in today’s work environment. Successful people are readers, learners, and communicators.  Obtaining new skills, using new ideas, upgrading recognized established skills is an outright necessity to succeed in today’s labor force. The successful person is regularly going to workshops, taking classes, obtaining training on new products or launches, and otherwise discovering emerging abilities that will certainly maintain them valuable in their careers. Successful people are long-term learners. Companies are trying to find people that have the training required to meet their demands.  Is that you?  Or are you happy doing what you have always done the way you have always done it?

6. STRATEGIC CAREER DEVELOPMENT‚ Career Development differs from Expertise or Professional Development. Professional Development is education and learning while Career Development is planning and setting goals. Successful people design a “profession” strategy with written goals for short-term as well as long term. They lay out the steps had to relocate their professions from Point A to Factor B within period of time C and also plan exactly how they are going to accomplish those actions. Successful individuals have somebody to which they are responsible for their progress and also that will certainly check their success in achieving their objectives. A good example would be hiring a career, business, or leadership coach.

Good companies with solid management are looking for people who  desire to commit to the firm for a long period of time. Job progression is a powerful selling point of candidates to potential companies.
