“Depending on what they are, our habits will either make us or break us. We become what we repeatedly do.”

Sean Covey

Successful entrepreneurs create excellent habits.  This is from my personal observation, as a business and career coach.  Also, it is not an accident. The majority of us know that we have bad habits that prevent us from achieving what we want in life. We also know that we need to replace these with some empowering habits that will aid us in making the transition to a better life a lot easier.

This is all well and good, but the problem is that breaking bad habits and forming new excellent ones is a tough thing to do. It requires dedication and effort that most people are not prepared to commit to. However, this is one of the keys. In many cases, successful entrepreneurs create excellent habits without knowing it because they keep doing what works.

If you really want to rid yourself of bad habits and form good ones that will change your life for the better, you need to understand how patterns work. In this article, we will look at the science behind habits to better understand them and increase your chances of making a successful change in your life.

How Successful Entrepreneurs Create Excellent Habits

Good Habits Have Cues

All habits have cues. These are the things that trigger a specific pattern within us. There are different categories of prompts, triggers, or cues.  The experts believe that they fall into five main categories which are:

  1. Your emotional state
  2. Particular times of the day
  3. What you see
  4. Where you are
  5. The influence of others

A habit is a neurological loop in your subconscious mind. When the right cue appears, it will automatically trigger the pattern. It is tough to change your response to these cues, especially if you have habits that have been around for years. We’re aware our practices are being triggered by these cues. Successful entrepreneurs form good to excellent habits based on these cues either because they are unconsciously competent or learn how from a coaching program.

There Is Invariably A Routine

As soon as you experience the right cue, you will go through a routine that will exhibit particular behavior or take specific actions. This is important because it presents you with the opportunity to replace a bad habit with a more suitable method.

Many psychologists will tell you that it is far more effective to replace a bad routine with a good one. It is a far superior strategy in trying to totally eliminate a bad habit altogether. This makes a lot of sense and makes breaking your bad habits much easier if you replace the routine with something better.

Forming Good Habits Have Rewards

All habits have a reward associated with them. You may not realize this, but it is true. Each time you smoke a cigarette or eat junk food, there is a reward attached to this. Smoking may make you feel relaxed, for example. Even good habits have “awards,” such as cleaning your teeth makes your mouth and breath feel fresh.

You Crave Habits For A Reason

Because you repeat your habits repeatedly, you will receive your reward, and then your brain will start to crave whatever the prize is. This craving strengthens the pattern, whether it is good or bad.

The craving is a positive thing for positive habits because it makes the habit stick. On the flip side, it is a negative for those bad habits because it will always nag at you to indulge in them.

You are now aware of the neurological habit loop that will help you break any bad habits that you have and form new ones that are good for you. It is a matter of addressing the cues, routines, and rewards to make the desired changes.

5 Reasons Why Business People and

Successful Entrepreneurs Create Excellent Habits

Your habits define you whether they are good or bad. So if you want transformation in your life for the better, you want to form good habits. It is never easy to create a new good practice, so you need inspiring reasons. You will need a lot of motivation to indeed form a positive habit, so having a healthy “why” is essential.

Suppose you are struggling to come up with strong enough reasons to take the time and effort to bring new good habits into your life. In that case, we have five excellent reasons for doing this in this article for you.

1. Your Habits Truly Define You

I have already mentioned this. A lot of people do not realize that their habits are who they are. Patterns are something that you do regularly and are triggered in many different ways. Not all practices are wrong, of course. When you wake up in the morning and shower and brush your teeth, these are excellent habits to have.

Excellent habits are the key to changing your life for the better. If you are overweight, then creating a new pattern to eat more healthily or exercise regularly will help you a great deal. There is no end to the new habits that you can form to make your life better.

2. It is possible to change your Habits

Never believe that you are stuck with a negative or bad habit because you have been indulging in it for a long time. If you want to change any habit, then you can do it. I’m not saying that this is an easy thing to do, but it is possible.

If you want to lose weight, then take a close look at your eating habits. What do you eat for breakfast every day? If it is unhealthy, then change it to something healthier. The same goes for lunch and dinner and eating those sugary junk food snacks.  I’ve noticed that most the successful entrepreneurs create excellent habits for their health as well as in business.

3. Achieve your Goals with new Good Habits

Do you set challenging goals for yourself? If you don’t, then you need to start doing this right now. Let’s say that you are tired of the way you look in the mirror. You are at least 20 pounds overweight, so you set yourself up to lose this weight.

The best way to lose the weight and keep it off is to make it a new habit. Find a diet plan that will satisfy you and make this a new habit. Post your new diet plan everywhere to remind you that this is how you will live from now on. Remove temptations, so you are less likely to go off the rails.  See The Healthy Business Owner for more on this topic.

4. Create a New Foundation for your Life

Successful entrepreneurs create excellent habits as a way set a new direction for their life. As patterns dominate our lives, we must form the right ones and eliminate the wrong ones. If you want to live a life of gratitude, you need to make gratitude a habit.  See my article

The Major Health Benefits Of Gratitude for more on this topic.

By choosing the right habits, you will create the foundation for a happy and healthy life. Think about your long term goals and form new habits that will totally support them.

5. With Good Habits You Don’t Need Continual “Motivation”

There are going to be times when you cannot find the motivation to go to the gym, for example. When regular exercising is a habit for you, the motivation will be automatic, and you will just go there and get a good workout.  So don’t forget successful entrepreneurs create excellent habits in all areas of their life.
