Nowadays, emotional intelligence is as equally important as having a high I.Q. It is the strength and ability to recognize, understand, and manage emotions. It includes the skill to realize the reasons for every emotion, and the capacity to choose the appropriate reaction suitable to that emotion.

Recent studies show that people with high emotional intelligence are happier and achieve more in life. They know that every feeling or emotion may lead to a particular behavior. This behavior or attitude will positively affect their lives, careers, and relationships if they take the appropriate action.

A person obtains a certain level of emotional intelligence as early as his or her childhood years. Their upbringing at home will undoubtedly affect their ability to understand and manage emotions. The environment where he or she lives is also a factor on the level of emotional intelligence.

However, emotional intelligence is something that could be enhanced or developed. Fruitful and happy people were not born with a high emotional quotient. They put in a lot of effort to improve it. Here are some tips to contribute to improving yours:

a. Identify and know your true self.

Being aware of yourself is important. You may want to have a journal composed of a list of your strengths and weaknesses, principles and beliefs, likes and dislikes, and goals in life. It will help you to comprehend the things that can make you lonely, angry, disappointed, or happy. It is the first step to knowing and understanding the reasons behind your emotions. By identifying the reason, it will not be difficult for you to manage an emotion.

b. Practice empathy.

Empathy is the ability to have a profound understanding of emotion. It is needed to understand other people’s feelings and behaviors. As the saying goes, “Always put yourself in the other person’s shoes.” It is the best way to understand what they feel. It pays to know the reasons for every emotion and behavior. In this manner, you will know the kind of reaction that you should display.

c. Learn to control and manage emotions.

A lot of people experience reacting to a situation that they regret after. This may result in broken relationships, bad decisions, and of course, regrets in life. It is recommended to think before you act or react. Being an emotionally intelligent person also means knowing when or how to react. You should be aware if there is a need to respond right away or just keep your silence. If you practice control of your emotions, there is a great chance for you to formulate sound and wise decisions. You can also avoid regrets.

d. Practice, discipline and encourage yourself to enhance emotional intelligence.

Knowledge and expertise in any aspect can be acquired through practice and consistency. It is recommended to read a book, and other types reading materials, or have a coach who can help you attain a high emotional intelligence. It will help you become disciplined and improve your motivation to have a profound knowledge of how to control, manage and develop better emotions.
