Leadership and Cinema

To be a Better Leader Go To the Movies!

Learning Powerful Leadership Lessons through Cinema

Imagine if you had the skills to actualize your passion to lead. How much difference could you create in your environment?

We know that real leaders could make a significant difference to organizations, and to individuals. Unfortunately, not everybody is excited about becoming a much better leader. Far too many of them simply don’t ‘get it’.

Business skills, alone, are not nearly sufficient in today’s hyper-competitive world.

This reality was made clear to me in a significant leadership advancement program
I participated in as an instructor a number of years ago. Sitting in the large meeting room at the initial gathering, I was struck by how much most of the supervisors’ concentration was on what they considered as their ‘day-to-day work’—not on becoming a much better leader. We could supply exceptional leadership training, but, if we didn’t motivate people to alter their behavior, it would certainly all be for nothing.

Where to Locate Motivation

My realization on where to find motivation came when I was asked to participate in a leadership seminar series. The organizers wanted me to create an environment that was conducive to learning, as well as entertaining, in a way that would certainly assist everyone in “getting it”. My answer? Film and video clips!

After a highly successful seminar I gave in which I used film clips to reinforce key learning points I understood that well-chosen clips (or full-length features) from quality movies were an excellent vehicle for teaching and motivating leaders:

• They stimulate attentiveness and generate discussion.
• They use stories and narratives, among the most powerful for transforming performance.
• They highlight different leadership activities in a fascinating way.
• They may feature a few of the past’s most famous leaders, like Nelson Mandela, Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, and John F. Kennedy.
• It is easy to discover ideas for movies that project leadership—if you can’t think of any quickly, ask your close friends or search the Web, and you’ll locate a lot of ideas. Time permitting, I prefer to have the audience view the entire movie in one sitting, in a discovering context. However short, self-contained scenes which present role models of leadership or management behavior can be extremely efficient.
